To cement Sunday 16th December in the history books as a great day for Blayney Chess Club, Garry Mann came home from the NSW Junior Chess Leagues Individual Country Championships with an equal 2nd place in one of the closest and hard fought contests that this title has seen for many a year. Being a half point shy of the winner, Gill Morris, may seem a little frustrating, but that is erased by the knowledge that you are among the top half dozen country players in the State, and now acknowledged as among the top four is certainly more than satisfying. With Garry's effort and Bradley McKinnon also managing to finish equal 2nd in the U12 section, this is the best ever result registered by the Western Region to date. It is heartening to see the Western Region beginning to shape up as worthy rivals to the traditionally stronger Southern and Northern Regions and emphasises that the area's Chess Clubs are doing a great job in the instruction and coaching of their juniors. Garry now prepares to go off to University, and the Club though saddened to see him go, looks forward to his visits back home. Hopefully he will bring good news about both his Uni work and further chess victories. |
