Quote courtesy of ChessVideos.TV Western Region InterClub ChallengeSunday 19/10 and Dubbo hosted Bathurst in their deferred match. With a chance to seal the competition win, Bathurst were dealt a massive blow when three of their best players were unavailable for various reasons, and they even had to play one player short. Dubbo didn't let the chance go by, a win here and then with a match to play against Katoomba, the door was open for them to stake their claim for the inaugural title of Western Region InterClub Challenge Champions.
On board one, Dubbo's Trevor Bemrose faced Jamie Davidson. In a clear indication of the task before Bathurst, the rating difference here was only a mere 350 or so points in favour of Trevor. Despite Jamie's best efforts, Trevor went on to register a nice win. On Board 2, Rod McPhee took up the gauntlet against Dubbo's Sandy Aich, this was a much closer match up, with only 140 pts being the difference, and with it all on the line, Rod managed to get into a level game where neither player could establish any advantage and a drawn result followed. On Board 3, Dubbo introduced a newcomer to the competition, Grant Gleeson who had to face the ever reliable Richard Thatcher. Richard doesn't get to play as often as he likes, but always answers the call to arms when needed. In a tense game, Grant managed to place Richard in a bind and kept squeezing until something popped to register a very nice win in his first ever InterClub game. With Board 4 a forfeit win to Dubbo, Dubbo were comprehensive 3.5-0.5 winners.
This now sets an intriguing scene, Dubbo have another deferred game, against Katoomba to play and a win in this match will see them overtake Bathurst to win the title. We look forward to this match being played on the 16th November. In a bonus to local chess fans, this match will be played in Blayney, at the Bowling Club, so come along on the day, play is due to commence at 12:00 pm.
In the other game from this round, played on 28/9/08, Blayney were at home to Katoomba. The Katoomba team arrived in Blayney quietly confident of success, they were fielding their strongest possible team, Blayney was minus their usual Nr 1. Katoomba thought that the day was perfect for them to avenge their earlier loss to Blayney. Yet that Blayney Barbarian spirit can never be discounted. At the end of proceedings, the score line read 3.5-0.5, it was something of a rout, but the amazing thing was that it read as Blayney winning! Results here. Full Blayney vs Katoomba report. 2008 Blayney OpenA great event, enjoyed by all and sundry.
